BEST PRACTICES:

1. TRANSPARENCY

Sources of funding to be readily disclosed. Information about research funding is to be routinely included. Clinical trial registration number to be included where available.

2. CONFLICT OF INTEREST

Conflict of interest should be clearly stated. Situations considered as conflict should be avoided.

3. AUTHORSHIP

The ICMJE authorship criteria state ‘authorship credit should be based on 1) substantial contributions to conception and design, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data; 2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content, and 3) final approval of the version to be published. Authors should meet conditions 1, 2, and 3.’

Authors should submit a short description of their contribution to the work.

4. ORIGINALITY OF THE WORK

Authors should submit a declaration that the essential substance of the work has not been published elsewhere in part or in full. Publication of clinical trials should have a mandatory clinical trial registration. Editors should ensure that sub-group analyses, and meta- and secondary analyses are clearly mapped to the data that has been already published, that they refer directly to the primary source, and that (if available) they include the clinical trial registration number from the primary publication.

5. RESEARCH MISCONDUCT

Concerns of misconduct raised by peer reviewers are viewed with serious concern and appropriate action will be initiated.
